Check a container number
Does the container number on the B/L or invoice add up? Every real container number has a check digit. We verify it and show which shipping line or leasing company owns the container. You can also check an air waybill (AWB) or B/L number here.
How does this check work?
- Enter the container number: 4 letters and 7 digits, for example MSKU 123456 5.
- We verify the last digit according to the international ISO 6346 standard. A made-up number almost never passes.
- You see the owner code (shipping line or leasing company) and a link to track the container online.
What to look out for
- A fake B/L or invoice often contains an invented container number. A wrong check digit is a hard red flag.
- Does the seller name a different shipping line than the container's owner code? Ask more questions.
- Leased containers (e.g. Textainer, Triton) are used by many lines; track them through the line on the B/L.

Frequently asked questions
How is a container number built?
Three letters for the owner, a U for freight container, a six-digit serial number and one check digit.
What if the check digit is wrong?
Then the number almost certainly does not exist. Ask for the correct number and verify it with the shipping line.
Can I also check a B/L or air waybill?
Yes, in the full version of SafetyBizz, which also checks AWB numbers and carrier codes on B/L numbers.
