Check a phone number
Called by an unknown number, or did a new customer or haulier give you a number? Check here for free which country it is from and whether it is a landline, mobile or VoIP number.
How does this check work?
- Type the number, ideally with the country code (+44, +32, +31). Without a country code we assume the country of this page.
- We look at how the number is built: country, area and type of number.
- You see whether it is a landline, mobile, VoIP, freephone or premium number, and the area for landlines.
What to look out for
- A VoIP number is an internet number. Anyone can get one anywhere in the world, so it says nothing about where someone really is.
- A company with an office usually has a landline. A large company with only a mobile or VoIP number is a reason to ask more.
- In doubt, call back on a number you look up yourself, for example on the official website or at Companies House.
- Note: we recognise VoIP by the number ranges reserved for internet calling (such as 056 in the UK). An ordinary landline number can also run over the internet; that cannot be seen from the number.

Frequently asked questions
Can I see who the number belongs to?
No. Whose name a number is in is not public. You do see the country, the type and, for landlines, the area.
Why is a VoIP number suspicious?
In itself it isn't: many businesses call over the internet. But fraudsters use them a lot, because the number says nothing about where they are.
Is the network always right?
No. We show the network that originally issued the number. Numbers can be moved to another network.
Who is calling me? Can I look up an unknown number?
Here you see which country and area the number is from and whether it is a landline, mobile or VoIP. Does the caller say they are from a company? Look the company up yourself and call back on the number from its official website.
Is this number a scammer?
Nobody can tell from the number alone. Warning signs are a VoIP or forwarding number, a number from a different country than the company, and pressure to pay or share details quickly.
